Coming in March…

14 Pines (Hammond Lake) by Kathy Pilling-Whitney, 2021, acrylic on canvas, 36″x 48″, $400

Between Every Two Pines Exhibit

The Gmeiner Art & Cultural Center is proud to announce an opening reception for “Between Every Two Pines” an exhibit of works by Kathy Pilling-Whitney which will be held on Saturday, March 5th from 2-4PM. Kathy will give an artist’s talk at 3PM to explain her techniques and inspirations. Admission to the gallery is free, and light refreshments will be served at the reception, including wine from Shutter Homestead.

The drawings and paintings in this exhibit are inspired by a quote from John Muir, “Between every two pines is a doorway to a new world.” The exhibit will include a variety of works, including watercolor and ink designs of leaves and landscapes, 7 symbols designs, “exploded” jewelry designs, house portraits, colorful still life arrangements, and acrylic landscapes inspired by local beauty. Kathy’s work is by turns energetic and restful, saturated in color and muted, warm and cool. This exhibit is suitable for all ages.

Kathy Pilling-Whitney is currently retired and lives outside of Tioga with her husband and rescue dog. She has frequently exhibited work in the Gmeiner’s regional juried exhibitions. Kathy has also had work exhibited at the Arnot Art Museum, Steuben Trust, Keuka Lake Art Association, and the George Waters Gallery at Elmira College. Over the years, she has been involved in many aspects of art curriculum and professional development. She taught art from kindergarten through twelfth grade at Hornell City School District, Greenwood Central School District, Corning-Painted Post School District, and Elmira City School District. Former students of Kathy’s are encouraged to come out and see her at the reception.

Kathy Pilling-Whitney will be offering two free classes, one for adults and one for children, in conjunction with her exhibit. The adults class will be on acrylic landscapes on a colored ground and will be held on Saturday, March 19thfrom 2-4PM. The children’s class (ages 10-16) will be on 7 symbols and will be held on Saturday, March 26th from 2-4PM. About

The Gmeiner Art & Cultural Center is a non-profit dedicated to the community of Wellsboro by Arthur J. Gmeiner in memory of his family. We are committed to cultivating the link between art, culture, and community. Our gallery space allows local artists to share their work, while our studio space is a hub for creatives to congregate. We host art exhibits as well as the Mountain Laurel Quilt Guild, Grand Canyon Photography Club, Wellsboro Art Club, Wednesday Morning Musicales, and the Friday Club. The facilities can be used by any member of the community for educational purposes.

Architecture

The architecture of the Gmeiner Art & Cultural Center was inspired by the Mid Century Modern Movement of the mid 20th century. The structure stands out from the dominant 19th century architecture of Main Street Wellsboro. Efforts to preserve and enhance the Mid Century design of the building are ongoing at the art center.
